History

Membership was initially drawn from the old London Commercial Club and those former members paid 10 Guineas each to join, new members paid 20 Guineas.

In 1920 it was decided by the committee of the day that all members who had paid 40 annual subscriptions would be entitled to Honorary Membership. Also in the same year members subscriptions were raised from 10 Guineas to 13 Guineas. Generally this met with approval of the members though only one member refused to pay and promptly resigned.

The first Chairman of the Gresham Club was Mr. John Abel – Smith M.P. who was to chair the club for twenty years.

Prior to 1912, the election of candidates for membership was by ballot of the members and after 1912 this process was carried out by the committee.
