History

Abchurch Lane

Now existing in two parts between Cannon Street and Lombard Street, this little London Lane was once famous for its cake shops. After that, it gained great popularity as the place in London to sample authentic French Cuisine. For one or two guineas a head you could have an authentic French meal and the accompanying flask of Bordeaux claret would only set you back by seven shillings!

The Club’s origins

At the beginning of 1843 the City of London Commercial Club closed and in the March of 1843 the same year the foundation for the Gresham Club was laid in the same place. The Lord Mayor of the day, Sir William Magnay, laid the first foundation stone at the St Swithens Lane address on February 8th 1844.

In 1913, it was paid to vacate these premises and a new building was constructed in 1915 in Abchurch Lane by William Campbell Jones, as a purpose built home for the members of the Gresham club.
